Red Celebrates All February Long: Its National Chocolate Month!

So, we celebrated National Dark Chocolate Day on 2/1. We also know that National Chocolate Day is also celebrated annually on October 28th.
But did you know that every February is National Chocolate Appreciation Month!? This is a month-long celebration of the sweet and delicious treat that is chocolate. It is celebrated in the United States in February each year. During the month, people are encouraged to not only enjoy this decadent treat, but also learn about the history of chocolate and its production.

The history of chocolate dates back thousands of years

Chocolate was first consumed in Mesoamerica between 1500 and 400 BC. The Aztecs and Mayans believed that cacao seeds were a gift from the gods, and used them as currency. They also made a bitter drink from ground cacao beans.

In the 16th century, the Spanish conquistadors brought chocolate back to Europe. It was initially a luxury product, enjoyed only by the wealthy. Over time, it became more widely available and its popularity spread across the continent.

Later, during the 19th century, the invention of the cocoa press made it possible to extract cocoa butter from the beans, allowing to produce solid chocolate. This led to the invention of the chocolate bar, which quickly became a popular treat.

Finally, in the 20th century, the development of new techniques and machinery allowed for the mass production of chocolate. This made it much more affordable and accessible to the general public.
